General strikes in Europe and beyond

An autumn of strikes

Wages that don't stretch to the end of the month, impossible rents and cuts to public services while military spending goes up. This autumn, workers all over Europe are striking for the same reasons. These are the general strikes that have been called or are being prepared.

Proposal · 21 and 22 November

A common response to the rising cost of living

We, the Confederation of Tenant Unions, are proposing an international social mobilisation on the weekend of 21 and 22 November, against the rising cost of living, inequality and rearmament.

  • Price controlson housing, food and energy, to guarantee decent living conditions.
  • Higher wages and pensionsto recover purchasing power and cope with the cost of living.
  • Universal, high-quality public serviceswith guaranteed access to education and healthcare.
  • Taxes on large fortunesto fight inequality and fund collective needs.
  • An end to rearmament and a just ecological transitionwithin the planet's limits and centred on a dignified life for everyone.

International call

To all the peoples of the world, to their workers and to their social struggles:

We are the ones who refuse to give in to governments that serve the capitalist class. The ones who will not allow the advance of the new fascisms. The ones who refuse to accept a world in which a social majority cannot live with dignity.

In recent weeks, mobilisations have erupted in our countries. A wave of protests has taken to the streets and put on the table causes that we share and to which we have a duty to build common responses.

On the one hand, we are witnessing a runaway rise in the cost of living: it is impossible to find a home, ever harder to afford basic food, and affordable transport is lacking. On the other, austerity is back, with new social cuts tied to the demands of public-debt creditors and to the arms race. We, the working classes, pay the price, losing fundamental rights and watching public services such as education and healthcare deteriorate.

And behind all these crises lies an economic model that seeks to perpetuate so-called economic growth at the expense of exploiting workers and finite natural resources, putting a price on and speculating with the very condition of habitability: the roof over our heads and the shared home that is the planet.

Faced with this wave of revolts, mobilisations and shows of popular strength sweeping through different countries, we ask ourselves a question:

Are we ready to unite our voices in a common message, one that can reach every corner of the world and stir the hearts of our societies?

We live in a time when solidarity cannot remain mere words: it has to become an everyday practice, a tool for organising and a force capable of transforming reality. We are convinced that the answer is a resounding yes.

That is why we are sending you the following proposal to unite our struggles, coordinate our forces and build an internationalist response to the injustices we share.

Read in English

To all the peoples of the world, their workers and their social struggles:

We are those who refuse to resign ourselves to governments serving the capitalist class. Those who will not allow the rise of new forms of fascism. Those who refuse to accept a world in which the social majority cannot live with dignity.

In recent weeks, mobilisations have erupted across our countries. A wave of protests has taken to the streets, putting forward demands that we share and to which we have a duty to provide common answers.

On the one hand, we are witnessing an uncontrolled surge in the cost of living: the impossibility of accessing housing, growing difficulties in obtaining basic food, and the lack of affordable transport. On the other hand, austerity is returning, with new cuts to social spending driven by the demands of public debt creditors and the arms race. Working-class people are paying the price through the loss of fundamental rights and the deterioration of public services such as education and healthcare.

Behind all these crises lies an economic model that seeks to perpetuate economic growth — wrongly presented as an end in itself — at the expense of workers' exploitation and the depletion of finite natural resources. This model puts a price on the very conditions that make our lives possible and turns them into objects of speculation: the roof over our heads and our common home, the planet.

In the face of this wave of uprisings, mobilisations and demonstrations of popular power sweeping across different countries, we ask ourselves one question:

Are we ready to unite our voices around a common message, one capable of reaching every corner of the world and stirring the hearts of our societies?

We live in a time when solidarity can no longer be confined to words: it must become a daily practice, a tool for organising and a force capable of transforming reality. We are convinced that the answer is an unequivocal yes.

That is why we put forward the following proposal, to unite our struggles, coordinate our forces and build an internationalist response to the injustices we share.
